Prepare Your Home for the Coming Freeze
LLCC Membership,
With forecasted low temperatures in the 20s on tap for the region, here are some tips to prepare your home for freezing temperatures, make sure your pipes are protected. Here are some tips to avoid indoor flooding and other dangers due to burst or leaking pipes:
- Protect water pipes in exposed or unheated areas (such as attics, basements and garages) by wrapping them with tape and insulating materials.
- Protect indoor sink pipes that are against exterior walls by opening under-sink cabinet doors to allow indoor heat to circulate.
- Set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees day or night, even if you are away.
- Shut off and drain in-ground sprinkler systems.
- Drain and remove all outdoor hoses.
- Wrap outside faucets or hose bibs if you do not have a separate shut-off valve for outside faucets.
If you DO have a separate shut-off valve for outside faucets, now is the time to shut it off and turn on all faucets to drain the water out of the pipes.
