Preparing Your Home for Freezing Temperatures
LLCC Membership,
With forecasted temperatures below freezing on tap for the region, here are some tips to prepare your home for freezing temperatures: make sure your pipes are protected and avoid indoor flooding and other dangers due to burst or leaking pipes.
- Protect water pipes in exposed or unheated areas (such as attics, basements, and garages) by wrapping them with tape and insulating materials.
- Protect indoor sink pipes that are against exterior walls by opening under-sink cabinet doors to allow indoor heat to circulate.
- Set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees day or night, even if you are away.
- Shut off and drain in-ground sprinkler systems.
- Drain and remove all outdoor hoses.
- Wrap outside faucets or hose bibs if you do not have a separate shut-off valve for outside faucets.
If you DO have a separate shut-off valve for outside faucets, now is the time to shut it off and turn on all faucets to drain the water out of the pipes.
